Fig. 13 INSIDE VIEW OF THE HEAD IN THE MIDSAGGGITAL PLANE
The upper part of the figure shows the cranial cavity with its three pits. In the anterior cranial fossa (135) is the anterior meningeal artery (139);in the middle fossa (136) is the middle meningeal artery (29); in the posterior fossa (137) are the attachment of the dural tentorium (134), the venous sinuses (133, 132, 130), and the emergent vertebral artery (122). Along the slope of the sphenoid bon are the stumps of the trigeminal (V), the facial (VII) and the acoustic nerves (VIII). In the sellar socket the hypophysis (109) is lodged between the anterior and posterior clinoid processes. From the anterior fossa numerous olfactory nerve filaments (I) and blood vessels (140) pass through the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone into the nasal cavity and spread over the nasal septum (141). Back of the septum at the upper end of the pharynx, jus tabove the soft palate (104, ) is the pharyngeal ostium of the Eustachian tube (87e) of the left side. The spinal cord (143) with its nerves and denticulate ligament fills the vertebral canal.
